that the Mawadda Nour was not a unanimous choice.I admit I have missed the news whenit was announced end of last July, but better late than never.Newly-crowned Miss Arab World 2006 Amira bin Yussef (C), from Tunisia, poses with Iraqi First Runner-Up Claudia Hana (R) and Egyptian SecondRunner-up Dina Shalabi, at the end of the pageant, late 28 July 2006,at a luxury hotel in the Egyptian Red Sea Resort of Sharm El-Sheikh.(AFP/Amro Maraghi)Newly-crowned Miss Arab World 2006 Amira bin Yussef, from Tunisia, models evening wear during the pageant, 28 July 2006, at a luxury hotel in the Egyptian Red
Sea Resort of Sharm El-Sheikh. (AFP/Amro Maraghi)Honored to be Bahraini by soul for living in Bahrain for the last four years, I am very happy to know that Wafaa Ganahi, a 23-year-old teacher from the Law Faculty of Bahrain University, won the title, while the first runner-up was Miss Egypt Shaimaa Mansour and Miss Lebanon Rula Bahij, 23, was the second runner-up. Out of seventeen women from 15 countries attended the final competition. On the other hand, what does this contest and these photos tells us other than the general perceptions about such events? Well, for me they mean a lot.Yet, Hanan Nasr, head of the beauty pageant, told MMW “The main reason Nour has won the title was the fact the she is an example of the modest beautiful Arab intellectual girl who is beloved by all.”Looking at the photos of a beaming Maddawa Nour wearing her prize-winning sash, she looks to me like a stunning, and very real woman, and a much better role model for young women than some of the stick-thin models I see in magazines and on billboardsgive the Miss Arab World pageant and its organizers a big thumbs up for daring to go against the standardised norm. They’ve overwritten convoluted media ideals of beauty and encouraged Arab women to take pride in their culture, heritage and… intelligence.
